After failing to succeed in several 'regular' jobs, he falls in with some old cohorts and an on-again, off-again association with thugs. Post-war society is crumbling, and it appears that nothing will bring it back. Originally made for television, Berlin Alexanderplatz is a prototype for the modern long-form drama, grandfather to Tony and the Sopranos.

    DVD 4852 The corner Schönhauser Allee in East Berlin is the main meeting-point for a group of adolescents. Dieter is a construction worker who falls in love with Angela. She, in turn, spends time with the clique whenever her mother is occupied with her new lover. "Kohle" stays away from home to avoid his dad's alcohol problem, and Karl-Heinz is on his way to becoming a small-time criminal. Due to their interest in western music and culture they are regarded as no-goods and rowdies. Things get interesting when an incident forces Dieter and "Kohle" to escape to West Germany.

    DVD 573 The German poet, playwright, and theatrical reformer who developed the drama as a social and ideological forum is the subject of this program, in which those who knew him discuss his life and many works. Excerpts from plays such as Mother Courage and her children, The life of Galileo, The good woman of Setzuan, and Antigone highlight the development of Brecht's austere form of irregular verse. A later work, A little Orgnum for the theater, is the embodiment of Brecht's idea of true Marxist drama. It also showcases his theory of Epic Theater, which encourages spectators to view performances as scientific analyses of human behavior, rather than illusions of reality.

The prophecy comes to pass, as Alan is murdered, and Cesare is a prime suspect. Cesare creeps into Jane's bedroom and abducts her, running from the townspeople and finally dying of exhaustion. Meanwhile, the police discover a dummy in Cesare's cabinet, while Caligari flees. Francis tracks Caligari to a mental asylum. He is the director! Or is he?

As Cobra Verde, he is a solitary, vengeful figure, roaming the dusty backlands, shooting, drinking and womanizing. Hired as an overseer by a decadent sugar planter, he runs into trouble when his employer's three daughters wind up pregnant. The local bigwigs ship da Silva off to Africa to administer the faltering slave trade, assuming he will not come back alive. He arrives to find the slavers' garrison deserted, and the King, apparently, gone mad. Cobra Verde however, is a special kind of diplomat, and before long he is training an army of amazons to launch a rebellion against the King.

Among them is the father of a quiet, football-loving 11-year-old, Matthias, who lives with his mother, sister and brother in a West-German mining town. The boy has long found a surrogate father in the local football player Helmut Rahn, who has "adopted" Matthias as his mascot. The return of the boy's father Richard casts a shadow over the once-happy family: broken by his years in captivity, Richard has trouble adapting to life in post-war Germany and alienates his family through his severity. For Richard, football is pointless, and so is the World Cup that's about to be held in Bern, Switzerland. Matthias, however, longs to be there with his idol, who's been chosen to play on the German team. Through his passion for the game and his fighting spirit, Matthias rekindles a love of life in his dad's heart. And so, as the final match of the World Cup begins, a little miracle of love and generosity leaps across borders to help another miracle occur - the victory of Helmut Rahn and the German team, the miracle of Bern.

Along with many other films produced in 1965, this film was banned, and finally shown in 1990 after the fall of the Wall and acclaimed as a masterpiece of critical realism.

When his second commercial is a flop, his German girfriend tells him she is pregnant, and his parents kick him out of the house, he gives in to the temptations of the rival Greek restaurant owner across the street and agrees to make a commercial for his uncle's worst enemy. Based loosely on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.

Though Dreyman is known to associate with blacklisted director Albert Jerska, a known dissident, Dreyman's record is spotless. Wiesler discovers that Minister Hempf has an ulterior motive in spying on this seemingly upright citizen. Wiesler's sympathies shift from the government to its people - or at least to this one particular person.
