Data Sources

United Nations Environment Statistics Section.  Environmental indicators such as land use, air, climate, biodiversity, and emissions for UN member countries.

FAOSTAT  Statisical data for food and agriculture for 245 countries.   Registration is free but required. International statistics on production, trade, food balances, forestry, land use, irrigation, fertilizer, pesticides, agriculture, food aid, and fisheries.

FAO Soils Portal   Includes a soil survey as well as information on soil biodiversity, restoration, and assessment.


Web Soil Survey  A database maintained by the USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) that provides access to soil maps and data for more than 95 percent of the nation’s counties. 

World's Water  Biennial report with data and insights into freshwater issues 

Vegetation and Plant Distribution Maps.  Links to world, regional, and national maps.

OECD Compendium of Agri-environmental Indicators  Comprehensive data and analysis on the environmental performance of agriculture in OECD countries since 1990, covering soil, water, air and biodiversity.

After you develop a good search strategy and get results, you can automate your research  - the stored search will be run automatically and you will receive alerts that include direct links to new articles.   In ScienceDirect, run your search and then click on "Save as Search Alert":

If you've found one good article, you can use Google Scholar  to see if any other articles cite your source. Just paste the title of your article into Google Scholar and then select the "Cited by" link to see citing articles.
