Principal Periodical Databases

PsycINFO -- This is the first place to start for most research in psychology. Created by the American Psychological Association, PsycINFO contains more than 3 million citations and abstracts of scholarly journal articles, book chapters, dissertations, and other materials. The earliest citations date back to the nineteenth century, and the most recent are less than a month old. Almost all of the material you will find will be peer-reviewed.

The database includes more than 5,060 titles—over 3,600 in full text—from 1971 forward. It features a highly-respected, diversified mix of scholarly journals, trade publications, magazines, and newspapers.

    Bibliographic index for the field of aging. Subjects covered include: aging, gerontology, health sciences, psychology, social sciences and sociology. Topics include: theories of aging, Social Security, Medicare/Medicaid, marketing to older adults, elder care, Alzheimer's, health care costs and policy, financial and retirement planning, fitness, nutrition, housing and more.  
  • ERIC (Ebsco interface)
    Bibliographic citations, abstracts, and some full-text for journal articles, research and technical reports, conference papers and proceedings, program descriptions, teaching guides, and lesson plans covering  all areas and levels of education.
  • Diversity Studies Collection
    Covers a diversity of diversity topics related to social science, history and liberal arts. This collection explores cultural differences, contributions and influences in our global community.
  • GenderWatch
    GenderWatch is a full-text database containing 140 international publications plus reports, pamphlets, papers and conference proceedings devoted to women's and gender issues. It is a repository of materials on gender issues worldwide, the evolution of the women's movement, and the changes in gender roles over the last twenty years.

    When your topic is medically related.
  • JSTOR
    Includes a wide range of disciplines, including psychology, social work, sociology, and health sciences. Current issues of most journals will not be available.
  • ScienceDirect
    The title is misleading. In addition to scientific disciplines, includes psychology and social science titles.

  • Academic Search Premier
    Multi-disciplinary database which includes a large collection of peer-reviewed journals in many areas of academic study including: archaeology, area studies, astronomy, biology, chemistry, ethnic & multicultural studies, law, mathematics, music, physics, psychology, religion & theology, women's studies, and other fields.  Coverage varies, but begins in the 1990s for most journals.
  • ATLA religion database with ATLASerials
    Religion index to journal articles, book reviews, and collections of essays.

APA Style for Works Cited

There are several copies of The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (Sixth edition, 2010) at the reference desk in the library.

APA has its own APA Style website with both quick answers and tutorials.
