S.I.C. & N.A.I.C.S. Codes

These are 4 and 6 digit codes which are used to describe goods or services that a company makes or offers. They are useful in that if you know the primary S.I.C. or primary N.A.I.C.S. codes you can then use a variety of sources to find direct competitors.


NAICS (North American Industrial Classification System)
Uses a 6 digit numbering system to classify industries that either make a product or offer a service (such as banks) in North America. You can search the database by code or by text describing the industry. These codes can be used to generate a list of companies in an industry and to compare them using other directories found both print or online. You can search LexisNexis Academic by going to Get Company Info, Company Dossier, Create a Company List, Search Primary SIC code or Primary NAICS code. You can then further narrow the list by adding in Net Sales ranges, etc.

Company Financials, MD&A, Ratios

EDGAR Database (Securities and Exchange Commission) . Search for the company by name or ticker symbol. You want to look at the latest 10-K which will give the latest 3 years of financials. There is also a section called MD&A (Management Discussion and Analysis) in which executives try to explain why the company performed the way that it did.  You could also go to the company's website, look under Investor Relations for the Annual Report or Form 10-k.
Morningstar.com . Look up your company by name or ticker symbol. There will be various tabs for financials and ratios.
SEC Info
Securities Information from the SEC EDGAR database. Search by Name, Industry, Business, SIC Code, Area Code,Topic, CIK, Accession Number, File Number, Date, ZIP. You may have to join but membership is free.

Analyst Reports, SWOT Analysis, Statistics

Morningstar -Stock and mutual fund research resource. Gives independent analysis and recommendations. Screening capability.
Value Line Investment Survey -covers about 2000 companies and 100 industries. Each are updated quarterly. Rankings of industries and upgrade/downgrades of companies done weekly.
Seeking Alpha
Corporate Earnings call transcripts. These are the transcripts from quarterly and yearly earnings announcements are done by corporate officers to various financial analysts.
Business Insights Essentials -Includes investment reports & SWOT Analysis on selected companies.
Statista -research on industries, products, etc. Can be useful for finding market share and other statistics.

Employees, Board of Directors, Structure

Go to the Company's Website and go to Investor Relations. You can then look at the Annual Report, Form 10-K and the Proxy Statements.

LexisNexis Academic Go to Company, then Reports, then Company Hierarchy. This will list parent, branches and subsidiaries.
EDGAR Database (Securities and Exchange Commission) Search for your company, then look for the latest Proxy statement which is also known as DEF14A. This documents will list executives, members of the board and their compensation and major things to be discussed at the shareholders meetings.

Go to the Company's web page. Go to Investor Relations. You should then see if they publish a sustainability report.
