Some Tips for Searching Databases

  • Determine Subject headings/keywords and possible synonymous terms. Brainstorm with colleagues.
  • Search subject headings first, then keywords in the abstract if one is given. Makes the search more focused.
  • Many databases have suggested subject headings which show up after your initial search. Be sure to look at them.
  • Limit by dates and/or relevance (usually the amount of times keywords show up).
  • Geographic limiters may be available.
  • If an article is not full-text in the database(s) you are searching, Click on the Get It (green arrow) to see if it is available in other databases we subscribe to. If not, you may request the article via ILL (Interlibrary loan).
  • Contact me or one of the other librarians for assistance.
