About this Guide

This guide supports the course investigating the cultural, social, and political functions of sports by examining the Winter Olympics. The 2014 Winter Olympics (XXII) were held in Sochi, Russia from the 7th to the 23rd of February.  Students can access online books and articles on a variety of topics: national identity, globalization processes, gender policies, ethnic minority rights, art, freedom of speech, the environment, and the geopolitical system.

Watch me search LexisNexis Academic.  LexisNexis Academic is a robust source for news.  In this video I demonstrate how to search the headline and lead paragraph in the All News content area; second, I search the content type "broadcast transcripts" using the atleast command.  Finally, I show how you can browse by country to find news.

  • Sample search:  "Winter Olympics" as a keyword.  This is searching the phrase Winter Olympics (the quotation marks tell the computer to look for Winter next to Olympics) in the full text content of the entire e-book database.
